Salanova® leaves even better with Knox
Soft, round or crispy and fitting neatly on a fork, Rijk Zwaan’s new Salanova® lettuce range with the benefit of Knox™ answers consumer demands for quality leaves in their salad mixes – and you can experience the range at Hort Connections 2018.
Hosted by AUSVEG and PMA Australia-New Zealand Limited, the Hort Connections trade show in Brisbane from 18 – 20 June will bring together a wide cross-section of the horticultural industry from growers, processors, wholesalers to the food service sector and retailers.
From the number 226 stand, Rijk Zwaan will present its new ‘one cut ready’ Salanova lettuce range with Knox, the characteristic developed through conventional breeding techniques that delays the browning of cut surfaces in lettuce by several days.
The new Salanova varieties of butter, crisp, oak, and coral in red and greens are game changers and good news for the entire chain, according to Rijk Zwaan’s Retail and Trade Account Manager, Frances Tolson.
“From recent research where consumers were presented with a selection of unnamed salad leaves to create their own mix, the leaves chosen were mainly lettuce leaves. Their ideal mix contained a proportion of three green leaves to one red leaf,” she said.
“Our conclusion from the research was that three out of five customers were not happy with the current offer of salad leaves.”
Salanova lettuce varieties with the added value of Knox has the potential to offer new, exciting leaf blends with more of the leaves consumers want to buy.
“Baby-sized leaves are cut from mature heads, which not only gives you a smaller cut surface, but fantastic texture in the leaf – come and participate in our live salad leaf workshop, ‘All about the leaves’, on our stand, you won’t be disappointed,” Frances said.
The whole chain benefits from Knox. Growers will benefit from incremental improvements, processors and retailers can take advantage of better inventory management, stock control and decreased waste while the consumer can enjoy lettuce leaves that stay fresher for longer.
“We know a positive consumer experience will lead to increased customer loyalty and repeat purchases. The research showed that 30 percent of non-purchasers could be won over if the right leaf mix was available to them,” Frances said.
Alongside market leading varieties, Rijk Zwaan will also present a new baby rocket leaf type called Sparkle RZ as well as Tendita RZ, a versatile baby crunchy cos lettuce variety that is positioned internationally as a ‘snack’ lettuce.
“Innovations in baby crunchy cos can create a new snacking segment for lettuce that can broaden the success of snacking vegetables while our new baby rocket variety, Sparkle, can offer a new punch to salad mixes and restaurant menus,” Frances said.
Rijk Zwaan will be at Hort Connections from Monday - Wednesday, stand 226.
